Underwater explosions transmit shock through the ship’s hull as a brief but very high-energy pressure pulse.
Naval mines, torpedoes and nearby underwater explosions can generate extremely high acceleration levels that propagate through the hull structure within milliseconds. These shock loads can disable electronic cabinets, communication systems, power distribution equipment and other mission-critical assets precisely when they are needed most.
This pulse propagates through the structure, accelerating every mounted item — including crew, machinery and electronics — by hundreds of times the force of gravity over milliseconds.
Naval shock standards (MIL-S-901, BV 043.73) recognize that survival depends on isolating critical systems from this hull-borne shock so that the vessel can continue operating, navigating and defending itself after an underwater explosion event while maintaining operational capability and mission continuity.
The same principle applies to mine countermeasure operations where shock exposure is operationally accepted.
