Structural noise in buildings is fundamentally different from airborne noise: it originates as vibration in the structure itself (from traffic, HVAC equipment, elevators or neighboring machinery) and radiates as sound from floors, walls and ceilings directly into occupied spaces. Acoustic barriers and surface treatments have limited effect on this structure-borne noise, because the energy has already entered the building fabric. Addressing it requires decoupling the vibration source from the building structure at the point of entry (either at the machine mount, the floor slab or the structural connection) which is exactly what dynamic vibration dampers and structural isolation devices achieve.
